Diva – 14kt yellow gold ring with tourmalines and Tahiti peacock pearl
Cavatina
Some designs emerge step by step. The ring Diva had been playing through my mind for quite some time and was inspired by previous designs I made in the past. Each time I worked on it a little further, put her away again for a while and picked her up again later. As a result, this design sat on my workbench for a long time until every part was exactly as I envisioned it: the shape, the combination of gemstones, the color palette and the pearl.
Aria
I didn’t find the name until I placed the purple tourmaline in its setting. In the background sounded Beyoncé with the song Diva, and right then I knew this was the right name. The choice of this name has nothing to do with me, but rather the original meaning of the word. In the opera world, a diva was someone with talent, presence and skill: a designation for women with a strong style of their own. That meaning matches the look of this ring. So it’s about the character of the design, not about me as the creator.
Andante
Diva is entirely handmade in 14kt yellow gold and built around a special trio: a purple tourmaline, a green tourmaline and a Tahiti peacock pearl. The purple tourmaline is exceptional in color; purple is naturally rare within tourmalines, making it particularly popular. Due to the natural play of colors, the purple hue changes subtly with the light. Moreover, for centuries purple was so precious that it was worn only by those with prestige – a color that stood for dignity, strength and individuality. That rich history goes well with the deep, bright hue of this tourmaline.
The fresh green of the green tourmaline makes a nice counterpart. Although green is abundant in nature, it used to be one of the most difficult colors to produce sustainably. Vibrant greenery therefore became special and valuable. In many cultures, green represents balance, hope and renewal – qualities that give this design a calm, bright energy.
The Tahiti peacock pearl connects all the elements. Both purple and green hues can be seen in her soft sheen, sometimes subtle, sometimes more evident. The iridescent coloring gives the ring a different look each time, depending on light and movement.
After eighteen years of goldsmithing, I recognize more and more clearly what really belongs to my handwriting. Diva is a great example of this: clear lines, a strong color palette and materials that reinforce each other. Color plays an important role in my work; it determines the mood and feel of a design. In Diva, these elements come together in a ring that is both powerful and balanced.
Cabaletta
All in all, Diva is a unique ring – there is only one. The combination of the bright green, rare purple and special luster of the Tahiti peacock pearl gives her a look you won’t easily find elsewhere. And in doing so, she refers back to the original meaning of the word diva: not demanding, but distinctive. A diva was someone with talent, character and a voice of her own. Exactly those qualities come together in this design – in color, in material and in the way the ring displays itself.
